un nouveau tatouage - questionne

hmm interesting post. i know spanish and can pick through your post a bit.. your french probably isnt as bad as you would imagine!
Thank you :) I am asking my French-speaking Vox friends to help me translate "borrowed time." I would like to get a tattoo that reads, "borrowed time" - as a memorial to my friend who died and also to remind myself that I could die at any moment, and to enjoy the time I have left on this earth. I've always liked the French saying "emprunte du temps" but I want to make sure it means what I think it means before I get it inked onto my body :)
You know...I kind of like "the print of time" better than "borrowed time" anyway. Time stamps its print on us all. Just a thought.
Nightfly, that is a really good point.
oh so i kind of DID get what you were saying other than the tattoo part. that's a nice tribute and reminder.
Mon Dieu!

Bonnes bises! xxx
Hi,

The closest I could think of is "En sursis". "Emprunté du temps" isn't used afaik except perhaps for something coming from the past (which is not what you want I believe). "Empreinte du temps" comes from a different latin root (from "print") which is a valid french expression, when you want to describe something that shows a certain age. For instance the Sphynx in Egypt clearly shows "l'empreinte du temps" (worn out).

Careful, "En sursis" has multiple usage, employed when:
- you are very sick
- you live very dangerously
- you will go to jail next time you do something outlawed
What about "le temps emprunté"? "Emprunté du temps" means something like "borrowed from time," I think.
After reading your post this morning about "Erik" I became super bothered. I thought you were talking about a gay Erik that I know from Hawaii. I googled a lot, you are surprisingly harder to track down than I though. You would think I would be able to find your myspace if I had your real name, email, and address.....

This Erik, was from Texas, correct?
Anyway, Close people leaving unexpectedly always throws me for a huge "wtf" tangent. Coping with that I take the skills I learned from many many years of psychotherapy and drink until drunk, with 80% disregard for any "positive" coping strategies I made up along the way.
Scott,

No - different Erik. Mine is/was from Lansing, MI. Glad to know I'm not that easily Googled though. I like your advice about the drinking until drunk, then total disregard for positive coping strategies. I'm on it.

[this is good]

Xavier says that your french is terrible and he would like to straighten you out with a good spanking with one of your paddles. ;-)

Back to our French lesson:

emprunté du temps is "borrowed from time"

L'empreinte du temps is "the wear of time"

As you can see, concepts don't always translate very well. The french would say:

La vie est éphémère or "Life is temporary"

The imagery associated with this well-known concept is that of a mayfly, which uses the same name in french. mayflies are integral to flyfishing and have a lifespan of just one day. éphémère is often used in french literature to show the quick passing of time/things/people.

very sorry to hear about your friend.

Don't hesitate to ask me more questions about it !!

I hope you'll understand all I wrote.

bonjour ici, j'adoooore ce blog, thank you miss scotch...
yes i could read this too cause i speak spanish. go me! yes it's important to make sure what you'll have inked on your body for the rest of your life is actually correct. it sounds like it'll be some great ink. and i just wanted to say i've been thinking of you.
