Dear Rest of the Country,

I have read some scary things lately concerning your economy, gas prices, and credit crisis. Since no one else is speaking up - I feel it is my duty to let you know, San Francisco is your sanctuary. I am certain this will ruffle some feathers with my fellow citizens, who would prefer this juicy secret be kept to ourselves; I simply cannot sit back and watch this happen to you, without saying anything...

Did you know our minimum wage is $9.36/hr.? That's pretty good for the most basic entry-level gas station attendant, fast food employee, or day laborer. But surely, you can do better than that. If you have even half a brain, you can make a life here. Temping typically pays 16-20/hr. you may have to answer phones, or do filing work - but hey, it's better than collecting food stamps, no?

If you have 75% of a brain and a little initiative, you can do very, very, well for yourself in this city. If you are willing to demonstrate that you care about your job and appearance - even a little bit, you'll be on easy street. Also, we have amazing public transportation. So get rid of your vehicle, insurance, and gasoline budget. Plan on spending $45/mth on a Muni pass - that gets you around the whole city, by train, trolley, or bus.

Rent is a little steep here - but it is totally doable. You will likely have to suck it up and have a roommate; sorry - times are tough all over. But, there are a lot of rooms available in houses with people who have rent control. That means, you can score yourself a pretty sweet deal, if you are willing to turn on the charm or simply refrain from being a total psycho.

I know that you have been beaten down, that you're probably living hand-to-mouth, hoping that things will eventually turn around. Unfortunately, you and I both know that they won't - at least not for awhile. Therefore, I highly recommend you get your ass out West before it's really too late. Do what you want with this advice, my conscience has officially been relieved...
